I ran across this project http://www.jbprojects.net/projects/wifirobot/ when I was looking for some plans to build an RC snow plow since the transmisssion on my garden tractor (with the plow crapped out). I've played around with RC stuff for years. Mostly boats and vehicles , even an underwater UAV camera. I thought I would start out with this little project first then move on to the RC Snow Plow or Dozer.
I have a couple of RC 4x4's, a WRT54GL router, a couple of PIC16F628A chips and I've ordered an Arduino (ATmega168) to play with as well, so I thought I would take a crack at it. I have the 4x4 prepared and have the PIC circuit board layout ready and doing the power rail circuit layout next. Then I can etch them at the same time. I'll work on the mods for the WRT54GL serial port in between.

Ultimately, I'd like to build this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPg1ZMiC9pA because I have many of the components already, like the motors, motor controller, wheels, gears, chain drive, frame, camera and RC equipment. But the RC dozer in the video below might be a little more useful (can't decide yet). It would be nice to have the machine shop with a CNC lathe and some welding equipment, but that isn't going to happen.
This RC Dozer project might be a possibility too :

Anyway, it's another aspect of Amateur Radio that doesn't involve a microphone, but as a ham, I can use higher power for wifi, Radio Control, video & telemetry and brush up on my hands-on electronics.
Another use for a WRT54GL Router
